Tour de Pologne #7: Gasaprotto hangs tough with GC Favourites
Aug 09, 2019
Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Merida) won the final stage of the Tour de Pologne, from a solo breakaway. Neilson Powless (Team Jumbo-Visma) was 2nd on the stage with Gianluca Brambilla (Trek-Segafredo) finishing 3rd.
The final stage of the Tour de Pologne was another tough day of climbing. The race was characterized by a break of 14 riders going clear early on before Mohoric later left this group, on a solo mission.
The yellow jersey group tried to keep the break in check until the yellow jersey himself, Jonas Vingaard (Team Jumbo-Visma) was dropped. The peloton then became significantly reduced on the tough parcour, as only 40 riders remained in contention for the final 33km lap.
Enrico Gasparotto was still part of this selection, which was being led by Team Ineos, as they had the virtual leader of the race in Pavel Sivakov. As Mohoric was not a threat on the GC, he was allowed to ride free and take the stage win.
The group of Gasparotto came in 2-minutes down on the stage winner, with Sivakov taking the overall title. Our Italian was 29th on the stage and 35th overall.
