Tour de Pologne #6: Relentless course takes its toll
Aug 08, 2019
Jonas Vingaard (Team Jumbo Visma) won stage 6 of the Tour de Pologne from Pavel Sivakov (Team Ineos) and Jai Hindley (Team Sunweb).
Today’s 160km route profile at the Tour de Pologne looked like the serrated edge of a saw. 12 sharp ascents took it’s toll on the peloton with 20 riders not finishing today’s stage, including our Bernie Eisel, while Mark Cavendish opted to not start with his focus on this weekend’s European champs.
Our hope was for Enrico Gasparotto to be at the pointy end of today’s racing with Ben O’Connor and Stefan de Bod his right and left hand. Unfortunately, the events of the last couple of days have certainly made the racing that much harder for everyone, with Gasparotto feeling the affects.
A select group of 30-odd riders formed with around 40km to go and we had just missed that front split. A chase effort followed but it was short lived with so much fire power up the road. Gasparotto was our best placed at the line, finishing in 36th.
Tomorrow will be the final stage in Poland and the last opportunity to take something away from this tough week-long World Tour stage race.
